The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore came into existence in 1909. The Institute has been engaged in higher learning and advanced research in the fields of science and Engineering. The institute started functioning in 1911 with two departments and over a period of nine decades, has grown steadily to occupy its present leading position among the institutions of higher learning in the country. The Institute is a post graduate institution providing quality education and excelling in research and development at the cutting edge of several disciplines in science, engineering and technology. There are now over 40 departments and centres of sciences, physical and mathematical sciences, electrical sciences, mechanical sciences and information science and services.

The Institute has introduced many innovations in teaching and research that have contributed to the growth of science and technology in the country. The traditional programmes are ME, M.Tech., M.Des., MBA, M.Sc. (Engg.) and Ph.D. degrees. The Integrated Ph.D. program attracts the bright students of the country and is very popular. The other innovative programs are Young Fellowship Program in Science and the Young Engineering Fellowship Program.

The faculty of the Institute also undertake a large number of research projects funded by different agencies/organizations, both in the public and in the private sector. The Institute houses one of the largest computing facilities in any academic institution in the country and also holds the best library collections in the fields of science and engineering. The Institute has set up a digital library to meet the requirements of its faculty and the campus community also has access to a huge selection of e-journals and e-resources.

In August last year, Department of Education and Training, Australian High Commission, New Delhi organised a joint research symposium with IISc.

The symposium coincided with the visit of a large Australian Education Mission comprising of Vice Chancellors from many of Australia’s leading Universities, representatives of peak higher education organisations and senior Australian Government officials.

The visit was an excellent opportunity to showcase successful research collaborations between Australian and Indian partners, and discuss opportunities for taking such collaborations further.

Australian Universities, including the University of Melbourne, University of New South Wales, University of Queensland, University of Technology, Sydney and the University of Sydney has successful collaboration with IISc.

The Department of Education and Training based at Australian High Commission, New Delhi took a delegation of Australian universities to the institute in August 2015. The delegation took place during the visit to India of the Australian Minister for Education and Training.
