Indian schools follow the ‘10+2+3’ pattern of education similar to the Australian school sector.

There are close to 1.5 million schools in India enrolling 264 million students and serviced by close to 10 million teachers.

The school sector is segmented by levels of education (pre-primary, primary, middle, secondary and senior secondary), ownership (public, private aided, private un-aided and local bodies) and education board affiliation. The boards conduct public examinations at end of year X and XII (CBSE, state boards, CISCE, NIOS, respective state boards and international boards).

The Department of School Education under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) is responsible for development of school education and literacy across India. Other peak bodies include:

National Council of Educational Research and Training - an autonomous organisation to advise and assist MHRD and State Government in formulation and implementation of their policies and education programmes for qualitative improvement of school education;

National Council for Teacher Education - a statutory body mandated to achieve planned and coordinated development of the teacher education system throughout the country including research and training;

National Institute of Open Schooling - an autonomous organisation providing Vocational, Life Enrichment and community oriented courses besides General and Academic Courses at Secondary and Senior Secondary level; and

National University of Educational Planning and Administration– A National University that provides capacity building and research in the planning and management of education.
